Exciting news!

Temple Emanu-El has received a grant to purchase four dozen new Etz Hayim humashim for use in the Frost Sanctuary. Etz Hayim, a Hebrew-English copy of the Five Books of Moses with several contemporary English language commentaries, is a joint venture of The Rabbinical Assembly, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, and The Jewish Publication Society.  Rabbi Geller, Cantor Mordecai and the Ritual Committee have strongly recommended the purchase of Etz Hayim humashim for Temple Emanu-El and we hope to acquire 200 copies before the New Year.

The new humashim will offer our congregants a deeper understanding of the Torah text based on critical scholarship, with insights into the spiritual and ethical dimensions of the Bible. A separate commentary will address the current understanding of Conservative Judaism and biblical law. The link between each haftarah and the Torah reading is
explained in an approachable introduction and a series of learned articles in the appendix describe the cultural and historical setting that produced the Torah. Etz Hayim is the most widely used humash at Conservative congregations in the United States because it has become the humash of choice recognized for its accessibility and its scholarship.

We hope that each member family will want to participate in the Etz Hayim project. Each tax deductible contribution of $50 provides another humash towards our goal. Your tax-deductible contribution is also eligible for doubling by the Phillip and Patricia Frost Matching Program.

Along with the purchase of the books, we look forward to offering:

· A wonderful opportunity to write your own Hebrew names on the 'Donated By' placard (or, the name of the person for whom you're dedicating the donation), if applicable.

· A special session to learn more about the humash, the various types of commentary, and ways to follow along during Shabbat and holidays.

In addition, a copy of the ArtScroll humash now being replaced, will be offered as a gift to each member who donates to the project, to add the volume to her/his own home library, or to designate it for donation to a community/organization in need.

To participate in this project, please contact the temple’s office at (305) 538-2503.
